Grid Connect systems produce power for
households and
businesses that are already connected to the electricity grid. Energy is collected by photovoltaic modules (panels) which is converted by a "grid connect inverter". The solar array can be roof or ground mounted. NET metering allows you to use by the energy produced in the household, with any unused energy exported to the electricity grid. GROSS metering exports all the energy produced to the grid. The NET or GROSS meter records how much energy you use and how much you export, crediting your account for that which you export. In NSW we currently have a GROSS (NET metering allowed) Feed in Tariff which pays $0.20 per kWh exported to the grid, legislated until Jan 2017. A Grid Connect system can be designed to reduce your power bills, or cut your energy costs to almost nothing. For us to design a system to meet your needs, we will need to know how much energy you use on average per day, which is shown on your electricity bill.

Stand Alone systems (also referred to as Off-Grid systems) provide power to a household that is not connected to the electricity grid. Energy is collected by photovoltaic panels and stored in batteries. An "inverter" converts this energy into 230 Volt AC power which is used by the appliances and lighting in the household as normal. Energy efficient appliances and lights are recommended where possible, and each system is designed around the energy requirements of a particular household. Stand Alone systems may be roof based, ground based or constructed as a solar shed.
For the technically minded, many of the larger stand alone systems we design, now use an AC bus or hybrid design (SMA Sunny Island). This allows solar production, battery storage & fossil fuelled generator to all operate synchronised, during periods of high loads. The generator run times in extended periods of cloudy weather are dramatically reduced and battery life extended.
